After years of tasting quality Bordeaux wines, Lucio Gomiero felt inspired to produce wines of a similar caliber in his native land, the Colli Euganei of Veneto, Italy. Returning from California in 1980 with a bag full of clones and a devotion to quality, Lucio founded Vignalta on the tenets of attentive selection, meticulous vineyard management, and minimalist winemaking – preserving the integrity of the aromatics and flavors contained in each bunch of grapes, and letting the Colli Euganei terroir shine through in every bottle.
The Colli Euganei, now a regional park, are a group of volcanic hills which rise up suddenly from the flat horizon of the Po Valley. They experience a mild Mediterranean climate that is typical of the south-facing slopes of the Euganean Hills. As the Colli Euganei shares the same lines of latitude as Bordeaux, red Bordeaux varieties have proven to thrive in the region and have replaced many indigenous varieties following the phylloxera devastation in the late 1800s.
